What is this?! Another Country or something?

Ravleen was racking her brain to come up with a female duo to dress up as with her friend at a Christmas Fancy Dress Party that she is going to this week. (Will someone please tell me why the English immediately have hives if you suggest that they dress up for Halloween but have no problems dressing up during the rest of the year?)

I suggested Ginger and Mary Ann.

“Who’s that?”

“You know. From Gilligan’s Island. . . You don’t know Gilligan’s Island??”

“No. . .”

“I feel a mixture of really old and really American.”

Is it possible that the average English male is not aware of the ultimate guy test? The ‘Who would you rather schtup, Ginger or Mary Ann’ test?

Please tell me I’m wrong.

Hmmm, I’m surprised the Poms don’t know Gilligan’s Island, Nicole. When I first came to Australia in 1984, Ross and I went to a party in Sydney, and as we walked in the door, everybody was singing the theme song from Gilligan’s Island! I was blown away…but Ross said it was wildly popular here and absolutely everybody watched it. Go figure. I thought these Commonwealth types all followed suite!

Dianne,

It’s funny but Australia is very similar to America in a lot of ways with pop culture according to my friends from Oz that are here.

After I wrote this I asked someone here at work about it- he knew what Gilligans Island was- someone had recently told him about it. . . but he didn’t know about the Ginger Mary Ann debate. . .

I know it’s a TV show but nothing else. I can’t think of the English equivalent of that test but I’m sure there is one…
