I’m eating dinner at a Portuguese restaurant with Stuart, Richard and Ollie.
Richard says, “I was on the Brixton high street and heard this whispering noise.†He makes a swishy noise with his mouth.
Brixton is considered to be a rather rough neighborhood because there is yes, drugs and crime, but I always think there is a healthy bit of racism thrown in. When white folks see a lot of black faces they get nervous. I love Brixton. There’s the Ritzy and one of my favourite London pubs, The Prince Albert which is the closest I’ve come to finding a Silverlake (LA neighborhood) vibe as well as some yummy Caribbean restaurants.
Brixton is also where you might go if you wanna score some illegal substances.
Stuart gets excited. Brixton is his old hood. He’s hip to all the lingo those wacky kids are using. “They were selling drugs.â€
Richard nods, “I know.†He drags on his cigarette. “Each whisper is a different drug.†He drags on his cigarette. “I find this interesting.†Richard is German. He says things like, ‘I find this interesting’ which I think is hysterical. He does not understand why I think this is funny.
“Just make sure if you buy some—“
“I am not going to buy drugs Stuart.â€
“No, no, of course you aren’t. But if you do, be sure to bring baggies with you. I made that mistake once. I went up to this guy and he just stuck a pile of it in my hand. I looked down at it and thought, dear God.â€
“I’m sure the drug dealer was thinking the same thing.†I said.
“So he said, ‘Come on’ and told me to go around the corner. I was sure I was going to get shot, but he put it into a plastic bag and just said next time to come prepared because they usually do it faster than this.â€
“I can just see you holding a handful of pot walking down the street.â€
“They’re all really nice. It’s the people behind them that are bastards. Thomas, will buy us some drugs?â€
“No.â€
“But you’re from LA.â€
“And if I get caught buying drugs they may send me back there.â€

The first time I walked through Washington Square Park after moving to New York, this same thing happened to me. People kept coming up to me and whispering things. I was completely oblivious, of course.

I’m fond of Brixton too – the Prince Albert is a great pub, the Academy of course, and all sorts of yummy food.
And it’s totally overhyped. Having spent more than my fair share of time in the less savoury parts of NYC, I feel like telling people, “Ghetto? Man, y’all don’t *know* from ghetto…”
