All My Bags Are Packed, I’m Ready To Go

Off to America for 5 days.

Al and I were thinking of creating a pool to see how long immigration detains Javed. You see Javed is Muslim and he is brown and his family immigrated in the UK from India/Pakistan a few generations ago and the last time he came over to Seattle for a work trip they detained him and Khaled for a hour and a half.

I think all 30 of us should wait and gather behind passport control rather than waiting for him down in baggage claim.

On our way home from Vienna, my partner and I went through customs in Memphis. In front of us were two young Muslim women and their children. We’d spoken on the jet and learned that they’d been visiting family and were on their way back to their husbands in San Francisco. They’d lived in the States for several years.

It was embarrassing and shameful to see how the good ol’ boys of Security treated them. They’d had a long flight, the children were exhausted, and they were worn out from the trip. Security wasted so much time harassing them that they missed their connecting flight. The one woman was in tears as she spoke on her cell phone to her husband.

We felt so badly for them, so ashamed, that we said something to the security guards. They looked at us as if they would hang us on the spot if they could.

I’m a “brown” Mexican, wife is a pasty-white Caucasian. Several times now I’ve been detained — in the UK and US — when she’s been allowed to pass freely without question. I don’t care what anybody says, airport security DO profile by race. Incidentally, I AM an American — born and raised in Washington, D.C. and I’m also a US Army vet. Go figure.

So..what happened with Javed?
