Shaming the Family Name
Posted on February 2, 2008 @ 4:13 pm

Last night went out for drinks with one of my colleagues from the US and some of the Dublin folks. My colleague isn’t my favorite person in the world as his ultra American “HI!!!!!! HOW ARE YA!!!!!!!!!” vibe gets under my skin. He means well though.

I think he is a bit of a sad sack actually. It’s also frustrating to see that he has let himself be so defined by insecurities and anger. I mean we all are- but he really is. It’s slightly pathological.

He told a story somewhere between his 2nd and 3rd Manhattan about the night before he went off to Boarding School when he was 14 and his father told him, “Do whatever you want, but don’t shame the family name.”

It was such a horrible thing to imagine being told and it was really embarrassing he was being so raw with people that he doesn’t know well, so of course we made a huge joke out of it. The man is nearly 50 and he is still haunted by something from 35 years ago.

I feel bad for him.

Of course that didn’t stop Daniella and I from taking the piss by putting our Facebook status to “Being afraid of shaming the family name.”

I know. I’m a bitch.
